Unit 11 Reading Dewey meets Turing

This was an interesting article about the launch of the DLI.
the pairing of the librarian and computer scientist was to be a way to work and set up/design digital libraries.
The advent of the Web changed the plans.  computer scientist embraced the Web--it was a natural fit and the linkage of information is the basic part of computer programming.
It was harder for librarians.  They were envisioning collection development but journal publishers started charging for digital content--forcing the cancellation of subscriptions.
The core function still remains--information must be organized, collated and presented.
Computer scientist use hubs (links) to direct users to other web sites--ones that specialize on the hubs topic focus.  Quality hubs require curation--librarians add value to these hubs by adding value to what is linked, maintaining the hubs and online archives.
Maybe not what was envisioned when the project was first started but certainly a way both professions can join their areas of expertise to make it a win-win situation.
