Assigned Reading 10

What i could understand of this reading--mostly in note form.

OAI is a protocol that provides access to parts of the invisible web--that which is not accessible to search engines.  It was designed to meet the needs of e-print archive community.

Domain specific servers were developed specifically for open languages, sheet music consortium and the National Science Digital library.

Some of the shortcomings of the registry  were that there was spare record maintenance  (usually just flat lists) and few were complete.  Strategies were developed by the registry to work on the completeness were:
  • inventory of existing registry
  • following links that were contained with in responses
  • manually add repositories to the registry
Secondly they wanted to make it more searchable using criteria and browse manually without catalogization.   Third, expose registry data that are useful for machine processing.
